Communicating to Stakeholders

Understand how to communicate your sustainability efforts internally with key stakeholders.

1. Drive Sustainability Efforts Towards Common Goals Through Effective Internal Communication

Effective internal communication is crucial for aligning sustainability efforts with organisational goals. As such, leadership and organisational structure must drive the integration of sustainability into the heart of your business, ensuring that these efforts align smoothly with your strategic objectives.

1.1 Set the Tone with Strong Corporate Leadership and Structure

In the journey toward sustainability, the tone is set from the top. Strong corporate leadership and a strategic structure are essential to embedding sustainable practices into the heart of a business. This section outlines key steps to ensure that your company's approach to sustainability is both effective and integrated with your corporate ethos.

  • Establish a Clear Organisational structure for Sustainability: Create a robust framework that delineates the roles and responsibilities of individuals and teams within the sustainability initiative. This structure should align with the company's overall strategy and facilitate accountability and progress tracking.
    • Appoint a Chief Sustainability Officer (CSO): Designate a CSO or a similar role to lead the sustainability efforts and serve as the primary point of accountability. The CSO will be responsible for driving the sustainability agenda and ensuring that sustainability goals are met.
    • Form a Sustainability Committee: Assemble a dedicated team led by senior management to oversee sustainability initiatives. This committee will work closely with the CSO to align sustainability efforts with corporate goals and to provide strategic direction.
    • Empower Department Champions: Identify and empower individuals in various departments who are passionate about sustainability to act as advocates and liaisons. These champions will have clearly defined roles and responsibilities to promote sustainability within their departments and to engage their peers.

  • Integrate Sustainability into Corporate Vision and Systems: Ensure that the commitment to sustainability is reflected in the company's mission statement, strategic planning documents and existing systems. Leverage and adapt current systems and processes to support sustainability goals, creating synergies and efficiencies.

1.2 Create Opportunities for Learning

Learning and Development Opportunities: Foster a culture of continuous improvement and skill development by providing learning opportunities tailored to sustainability.

  • Sustainability Workshops: Conduct workshops to educate employees on sustainability topics relevant to their roles and the industry. These workshops will help build a foundational understanding of sustainability among employees.
  • Green Skills Training: Offer opportunities for employees to attend training programmes to develop skills that support the company's sustainability objectives, such as energy efficiency, waste reduction and sustainable sourcing. This training will enable employees to contribute actively to the company's sustainability goals.
  • Guest Speaker Events: Invite sustainability leaders, environmental activists, or representatives from non-profit organisations to speak about global sustainability challenges and inspire employees. These events can provide fresh perspectives and stimulate innovative thinking around sustainability.

2. Building Trust and Driving Sustainability Efforts Externally

Building trust and openly communicating your sustainability efforts are key to a successful business strategy. As demands for transparency in sustainability metrics grow from customers, suppliers and regulatory bodies, it's crucial for companies to not only adopt sustainable practices but also to transparently share your progress. This can be in the form of voluntary sustainability disclosures or other stakeholder communication strategies to share your sustainability progress.

2.1 Driving Sustainability Efforts Externally through Stakeholder Engagement

You can drive sustainability efforts externally through working with your stakeholders and customers by actively communicating and engaging them around your sustainability efforts. This can include:

  • Crafting campaigns that transparently showcases your brand's commitment to sustainable practices, reinforcing trust in the brand's values.
  • Utilising social media to not just spread awareness but also educate consumers on sustainability, creating an informed community that trusts your brand as a source of credible information.
  • Organising and participating in events such as webinars, workshops, and community initiatives that provide platforms for open dialogue on sustainability topics, further establishing your brand as a committed member or knowledgeable leader in the field.

3. Avoiding Greenwashing

To uphold the integrity of your sustainability initiatives and maintain stakeholder trust, it is important to steer clear of greenwashing. This can be achieved by:

  • Setting Clear Objectives: Define precise, actionable and quantifiable sustainability targets that reflect your genuine commitment to environmental and social responsibility.
  • Transparent Reporting: Regularly communicate with stakeholders, providing transparent updates that include verifiable data and clear evidence of your progress and accomplishments in sustainability.
  • External Assurance: Engage with reputable audit firms registered with ACRA or Testing, Inspection and Certification (TAC) firms accredited by Singapore Accreditation Council to independently verify your sustainability disclosures. This not only enhances credibility but also demonstrates your dedication to maintain traceability, transparency, accountability and continuous improvement.
